It’s complicated, it’s always a surprise to me…
How come I usually believe my important relationships will be easy?
I fall for this notion as I fall into love with people, relatives, lovers, friends, etc. Somehow, I think that the roles I’m in and the script that goes with them will magically guide me into perfect and harmonious alliances– but this never happens, because “it’s complicated!”
I spent so many years believing, wishing, hoping (projecting) and being hurt, disappointed, and baffled that my childlike need for a flawless connection was, once again, dashed like Charlie Brown and his run at the football – fooled again!
But I know something now, that I didn’t know early in life.
Relationships with others are, by design, a complex of entwined patterns, many of which are unseen by us, that’s what’s so tricky. We can’t see ourselves or the other very well at first, although we think so every time!
Relationship connection is layered and nuanced, it takes time, experience, and most importantly a level of self-awareness to be able to “see” and understand the people around us, especially those close, those we love.
Take a moment, slow down enough to ask yourself…who is this person to me?
What part have I asked them to play on the stage of my life? You may find new meaning about what lessons they are here to offer.
